PDP Monolith

Vine frequency engravings in white onyx, 2024
.

25 x 60 x 15 cm.

Work produced as part of The Potentino Denizen Project at Castello di Potentino (IT).

The “PDP Monolith” stands as an artful convergence of nature’s elements and digital design, meticulously carved by hand in white onyx—a stone celebrated for its durability and ability to softly diffuse light.

The engravings suggest a deep connection to the natural world, specifically the life and growth of vines. At the top, “PDP” is prominently displayed, likely the initials of the project and concept, giving it a sense of identity. Below, there appears to be a scientific or mathematical notation which represents data or findings from a study of vine frequencies—perhaps a visualization of the rhythm of growth or the pattern of vineyard sounds. This intersection of data with the tactile permanence of stone suggests a marriage of the quantifiable and the artistic.

The most striking feature is the series of engraved symbols that dominate the central part of the stone. The double helix spirals and the abstracted plant-like figures could symbolize the essence of life, DNA, and the growth patterns of plants, resonating with the theme of vines mentioned in the project. It's a visual representation of the invisible forces and the structures found in nature.
The glyphs etched at the bottom add a layer of depth and perhaps encode further information or insight into the project. Their blocky, digital appearance contrasts with the organic curves above, hinting at the digital processes used to analyze the natural frequencies captured in the artwork.

Overall, the “PDP Monolith” stands as a testament to the interplay between technology and organics, data and art, capturing the silent language of nature in a medium as old as civilization itself. It invites viewers to consider the unseen energies of the natural world and our attempts to understand and represent them through science and art.

The Potentino Denizen Project
This is an Art/Science project which will document new ways of thinking about environments and find new ways to depict what plants may be experiencing.
This is an attempt to create a new dimension of perception for the ‘human’ as a denizen*, putting us in touch with plants and place, making us more aware of our connection to the environment that surrounds us and possibly revealing a sensibility we have but are not plugged into.
